Simple solution for directional wells.
Sometimes you need to put a new spin on things to get the results you need!
Directional wells are increasingly a part of the onshore development landscape. The reduced footprint of multi-well locations provides many benefits, ranging from lower costs of drilling and completion to lowered impact on the local environment.
But directional wells present a problem for plungers too! It is very common to create a “flat spot” and shorten the plunger life dramatically. When a plunger is set in a deviated well it will typically begin to wear as it tries to make it’s way around the bends in the tubing. This wear will concentrate on one “side” of the plunger and when even just few thousandths get worn away, the plunger will preferentially turn to this “side” and continue the rapid wear process. Soon the plunger is badly out of round and missing trips.
Here comes the Sidewinder!
We learned with The Viper plunger long ago that the turning effect imparted by the fluted lower section evens out the wear on the plunger and extends it’s useful life.
The Sidewinder plunger has been derived from the famous Viper to provide a cost effective solid body plunger designed to travel more effectively in deviated tubing. We shortened up the contact length to make it more able to navigate the bends, and we give it the same spin with the fluted bottom. The result is a long lasting, efficient tool for those directional wells.
